Transition Town Aberystwyth

The Transition Town Aberystwyth initiative began in April 2007. By August we had more than 100 members. ‘Transition’ is the change to using less energy and the initiative is part of a growing movement throughout Britain. Driving this movement is ‘peak oil’, the end of the cheap oil on which we have become dependent. Production of the world’s crude oil is at or very near its peak. Inevitably, supplies will become scarcer and more expensive. Climate change is also a vital consideration. We need to drastically reduce our Carbon emissions, particularly from burning oil and other fossil fuels.

We’re in this together

A future burning much less oil need not be a daunting prospect. The Transition Town initiative is preparing for a ‘prosperity of less’. Increased community self-sufficiency is a positive alternative to blindly continuing consumption. Our well-being is not all about quantity – more, bigger, faster – but about quality too – better, local, more friendly… Through film screenings and public talks we will continue raising awareness and encouraging everyone to join in. The aim is a community-driven Energy Descent Action Plan. Already, we have projects on education, transport, housing, food, and skill-sharing. We welcome the participation of all sectors of our community: citizens, schools, businesses, local government… The future is ours and we’re all in this together.
